Connecting nature with the classroom.

Here at the Iain Nicolson Audubon Center, we believe the connection between what students are learning in the classroom and nature is an invaluable learning tool. The outdoor experience provides unforgettable lessons not only in science, but in all disciplines and in the process fosters awareness, appreciation and understanding of Nebraska's natural heritage.

Outdoor learning provides students concrete experiences to clarify abstract concepts, motivates those reluctant learners, brings variety to teaching and learning, and is compatible with many educational practices. (Herbert Broda, 2007)

Among the topics we delve into are animals and habitats, prairie, adaptations, wetlands, migration, birds and more. We follow new science standards in accordance with the Nebraska guidelines. Call us to learn what programs best meet your educational goals.

A sampling of programs we offer:

C.S.I. (Crane Scene Investigations) (Approximately 3 hours in length) - The largest gathering of Sandhill Cranes in the world happens right here in Nebraska! You and your students are invited to become Crane Scene Investigators and learn about these fascinating birds. Each program begins with a short, engaging indoor presentation that gives insight into what makes Sandhill Cranes unique and the importance of the central Platte River valley to their survival. We then begin an investigation to discover more about the why the cranes gather on the Platte River and their habitat needs. C.S.I. Programs are only available on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays from March 1st through the first week of April. Dates and times fill fast, so make your reservations early!

Crane Central - For educational videos about Sandhill Cranes, check out our Crane Central page.

Adventures in Birding - This high energy, interactive program will open your eyes to the wonderful world of Nebraska’s birds. You and your students will discover how easy it is to identify birds, as well as learn how to use field guides and binoculars.

Nebraska's Waters & Wildlife - Immerse you and your students in the study of the river, wetlands, prairie, and wildlife that rely on the Platte River ecosystem. Programs can easily be individualized to meet specific grade-level objectives and can function as an introduction or follow-up to classroom study. This program is available throughout the year except during March (See C.S.I.).
